Security and Travel Advice In Cyprus
Villa Key Points
Cyprus is renowned as one of the safest holiday destinations in the world, but like anywhere, incidents of burglary or theft can occasionally occur. At Cyprus Villa Retreats, your safety and the protection of your belongings are our highest priority. To ensure a secure and worry-free stay, here are some important points:
- Regular check-in time as of 16:00 hrs, checkout time is 10:00 hrs
- Bring limited amounts of cash – you can pay by credit and debit card in most establishments and use the plentiful ATM machines
- Refrain from bringing expensive jewellery or valuable items if possible
- Do not leave valuables in plain view, many villas have safes
- Close curtains/blinds
- Leave a light and/or the TV on when out of the villa
- We have invested a great deal in the security of our villas for guests’ peace of mind, including alarms, safes, door locks, window locks and more.
- Please use these facilities and always remember to lock the doors and windows each time you leave the villa, to ensure that your stay with us is as pleasant and trouble-free as possible.
- Safety around the villa pool is essential to ensure a relaxing and worry-free holiday. Always supervise children and non-swimmers, and never leave them unattended near the water. Use non-slip footwear around the pool area to prevent slips and falls. Avoid diving in shallow areas and follow any depth markings. Keep flotation devices nearby, especially if traveling with young children. If your villa has a heated pool or hot tub, check the temperature settings before use.
Entry Requirements & Travel Documents
- EU/EEA nationals can enter with an ID card or passport.
- UK, US, and most other travellers need a passport but don’t require a visa for short stays (up to 90 days).
- Check validity—your passport should be valid for at least 3 months after your departure date.
Currency & Payments
- The official currency is the Euro (€).
- Credit/debit cards are widely accepted, but small villages may prefer cash.
- ATMs are available in most towns and cities.
Getting Around
- Car rental is the best way to explore the island, especially rural areas. Drive on the left side (same as the UK).
- Public buses operate in cities and between major towns but are limited in remote areas.
- Taxis are available but can be expensive—always confirm the fare before your ride.
Language & Communication
- The official languages are Greek and Turkish, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas.
- Learn a few Greek phrases for a more immersive experience:
- Hello – Yia sou (Γειά σου)
- Thank you – Efharisto (Ευχαριστώ)
- Please – Parakalo (Παρακαλώ)
Local Etiquette & Culture
- Cyprus has a mix of Greek and Turkish cultural influences. Respect local customs, especially in rural areas.
- When visiting churches and monasteries, wear modest clothing (cover shoulders and knees).
- Cypriots are warm and hospitable—greetings with a handshake or a friendly “Kalimera” (Good morning) are appreciated.
Food & Dining Tips
- Try local delicacies like souvlaki, halloumi, kleftiko, and meze (a selection of small dishes).
- Tipping isn’t mandatory but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% is appreciated.
- Tap water is generally safe to drink, but many prefer bottled water.
Sun Protection & Health
- Cyprus has a strong Mediterranean sun, so pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Stay hydrated, especially in summer.
- No special vaccinations are needed, but travel insurance is recommended.
Shopping & Souvenirs
- Local markets offer handmade crafts, Cypriot wines, olive oil, and lacework from Lefkara.
- Shops are typically open Monday–Saturday, with limited hours on Sundays.
Electrical Outlets & Plugs
- Cyprus uses UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G, 240V)—bring an adapter if needed.
